How to overwrite time machine backup

Hello,

In 2014 I conducted my very first backup on an external hard drive that had 500 GB on my old macbook pro, I used 181 GB. I backed it up as I wanted to transfer everything on my new macbook pro. Today I wanted to backup this laptop just for safety on the same drive but it said i needed more space on my hard drive. I thought it would overwrite the old backup and make a new one but it won't. How could I do that?

My backup disk is a western digital hard drive.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), null
