macbook pro running hot with new iTunes 12.2

Macbook Pro mid 2010

Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Software OS X 10.9.5

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB


The last week or so my macbook has, on occasion, been running really hot causing the CPU fan to run hard. Something that has rarely happened before. I had a look at the system monitor and the new version of iTunes (12.2) has the CPU running at almost full capacity, what can it be doing that needs that amount of processor allocation? As soon as I quit iTunes everything calms down and the fan switches off within a minute or so an CPU usage reverts to normal.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), aluminium uniblock mid 2010
