iPod classic won't play after updating to iTunes 12.2 and syncing

After installing iTunes 12.2, I synced my iPod classic. Now my iPod won't play songs. At first I was able to use menus and get all the way to the song screen, but no songs would play. Now I am stuck in a submenu for an album. I can see the song list but cannot select a song or use the menu button to go back. (No, the lock button is not on; yes, I have toggled it.) Any ideas how to resolve? Thanks for any suggestions.
