Waking Up DVD Drive with a DVD Player Error: -50

I have a Mac Pro 2012 with Mavericks OSX.

After waking the Mac Pro from sleep with a DVD disk in the DVD drive, the computer indicated:

"Waking up DVD drive" on the screen

with a window stating

DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from:

Error: -50.

with a "Quit" button.

The beach ball of death appears when trying to press the "Quit" button.

The DVD player indicates Application Not Responding.

"Force Quit" is ones only option.

The disk does not appear in the side bar of the finder window.

I guess the DVD drive is not waking up as fast as the computer.

I have read about replacing cables to try to get it to wake faster.

I wonder if there is a way to keep the DVD drive powered up instead of powered down and having to wake it up after sleep.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
