iCloud calendar not properly syncing

If I create a calendar event on my iPhone it will sync to my Mac, however if I create one on my mac it doesn't sync with my iPhone. Both calendars are set up on iCloud. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Note: both are on the same iCloud account, have the latest updates, and both have been purchased new within the last year.
