2009 MacBook won't start up but fan and hard drive are working

Macbook seems to be in a sleep mode when turned on .... Power light on MagSafe lock is green .... Fans are on ... Hard drive starts up but seems to go into sleep mode after 5 sec .... Screen and keyboard won't light up but light on front stays on ..... Any one know if I take this into a apple store about how much is it to do a diagnostic and or fix ??? This is a 2009 MacBook Pro so warranty has been expired ... Thanks !

Looks like a dying disk.

Start up while holding CMD+R (until you see the grey progress bar): it will start in the Recovery Partition. If the Recovery partition does not start up: disk is dead.

If the Recovery disk starts up: in DiskUtility do Repair Disk, this may help. After the repair start normally: if that works make backups immediately; if that does not work: prepare for disk replacement.

Try the following:

Reset the SMC and the NVRAM:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Then try a safe boot:

If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar. The evaluation will be free. If repairs are required, you will be given a quote which you may accept or decline.

Ciao.
