Start up while holding CMD+R (until you see the grey progress bar): it will start in the Recovery Partition. If the Recovery partition does not start up: disk is dead.
If the Recovery disk starts up: in DiskUtility do Repair Disk, this may help. After the repair start normally: if that works make backups immediately; if that does not work: prepare for disk replacement.

Reset the SMC and the NVRAM:

Then try a safe boot:

If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar. The evaluation will be free. If repairs are required, you will be given a quote which you may accept or decline.
