Dell C1760NW - Yosemite 10.10.4 Installation Issues

Hi All,

I have recently updated my iMac to 10.10.4. This was a clean install not an upgrade. I came to install the drivers for my C1760NW but I am unable to get the printer working..!

According to the Dell the C1760NW is supported on 10.10 and I have downloaded the following Driver -Printer_C1660_C1760_Installer_Dell_A03_MAC.dmg.

After running the installer I head to add the printer, the driver is not listed and OSX wants to set it up as a Generic PostScript Printer..

I have a feeling the installer is not compatible with Yosemite and is not installing the drivers correctly.

Any help would be appreciated, I will have to go back to Mavericks if I cannot resolve this as I am not going to buy a new Printer. I have phoned Dell support but they cannot figure out why this is happening and want to charge a silly sum to investigate this.

Thanks

I have tired resetting the printing system, restarting and repairing the disk permission. When I reinstall the driver I still have the same issue. The driver is being put in the Library/Printers Folder. So I am slightly confused as to why this is not working? When I try to print the job goes straight to cancelling so the printer is being detected under the Generic driver.

Have to apologise MattMan55. The VM I was using to test the Dell installer was running 10.10.3. I thought it was 10.10.4 but I went to use it again for a different test and found it wasn't the latest. So I created a new VM running 10.10.4 and found that the Dell installer would not copy the two PPDs that did copy across in 10.10.3. It did create the Dell folder in /Library/Printers so I'm not sure why the PPDs didn't get copied to the Resources folder. But without them residing in this folder then you won't have your model in the Printers List.

So I think all you need is the PPD for the C1760, which you can copy to the Resources folder so that you can add the printer. Are you able to run the installer on another Mac running an older OS so that you can get the PPD? If not, then I may be able to email the file to you.

Your image of the PPDs folder shows that there is no supporting PPD for the Dell. This is why you don't see it in the Printers List.

I downloaded the Dell driver you have linked to above and installed it in a VM. Two supporting PPD's, "Dell C1660w Color Printer.gz" and "Dell C1760nw Color Printer.gz" are copied to the PPDs/Contents/Resources folder. And this in turn makes them available in the Printer List window. So the installer is compatible with Yosemite.

Given that you have the Dell folder in Library/Printers then it would suggest that the installer has worked in partially. Just seems that it did not complete and copy the PPDs you need. Have you tried running the installer again?

Hey PAHU, I also had this thought this morning. I loaded a Mavericks VM and installed the driver which copied across the PPDs, I then copied the whole Dell Folder and PPDs on to 10.10.4, annoyingly Yosemite still does not see the PPD in the Select software so I had to add them manually and it worked!

This is defiantly a issue with the installer, though I am not sure how to test it. I have emailed Dell support detailing the issue.

Thanks for you help!

I don't really know which post to respond to, so I will post here.

There is a way to get the PPDs without PAHU mailing them you. It is rather geeky, but that is part of the fun.

Grab the installers if you haven't already done so and mount the disk image. Look in the MacOSX10.7- folder, then in the Packages folder. You will find the file Dell C1760 C1660 Print Installer.pkg. That is the file we will start with.

Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities). We need an empty folder to work with, so let's make a folder "inflate". At the Terminal prompt, enter

mkdir ~/inflate

and hit the Enter key. That will create a directory "inflate" in your Home folder. Next we want to tell the Terminal to use that directory. Enter

cd ~/inflate

and hit the Enter key.

Now we will inflate that installer file so we can work with it. In the Terminal enter the command

xar -xf make sure there is a space after -xf.

Now drag the Dell C1760 C1660 Print Installer.pkg file onto the Terminal window. It will fill in the compete path to the file. Hit the Enter key.

Next, go to inflate you created earlier in your Home folder. Find the file installation files.pkg. Right-click (Control-click) on that file and choose Show Package Contents. You should now see four files. Right-click (Control-Click) on Payload and choose the option to Open with > Other... That will bring up a navigation window. The application you want to choose is /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Archive Utility. Select that application and hit the Open button. The files will magically expand and you will find a folder Library with all the Dell files and the PPDs.

Well, that may not be as easy as asking PAHU to mail you the PPDs, but it is something you can do without exposing your e-mail address or waiting for PAHU and his good nature to send you the files.

Hi,

you are describing the exact same problem in this thread that I have with my Dell on 10.10.4. Purchased it a few days ago but it won't appear in the drivers list, just as described. I have no pre-10.10.4 system around. Could you please email the ppd to me, too?

best regards and many thanks in advance,

I think I can make this more user friendly.

Double click on the disk image you downloaded from Dell. This will mount the disk image. Then open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities). Copy and past the following into the Terminal window and hit the Enter key. The PPDs should appear in the folder inflate that was created in your Home directory. I hope I can get the formatting for this forum correct. It should all be on one line. Enjoy.

mkdir ~/inflate; cd ~/inflate; xar -xf /Volumes/Dell\ C1760\ C1660\ Installer/MacOSX10.7-/Packages/Dell\ C1760\ C1660\ Print\ Installer.pkg; /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Archive\ Utility.app/Contents/MacOS/Archive\ Utility ~/inflate/installationfiles.pkg/Payload; cp -R ~/inflate/installationfiles.pkg/Library/Printers/PPDs PPDs

EDIT: I was able to confirm that the code got formatted correctly and it works as intended.
