.pdf files on my macbook do not sync to my iPad 2

i have a bunch of .pdf files which used to be on my iPad 2 and have disappeared since the last Software update !

I can select them on my macbook pro in iTunes to sync to my iPad, but they never get synced to my iPad.

funny enough, the files Show up on my iPhone !

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), Attic Mac
