Macbook pro 13in USB sockets seem worn and do not always work

My Macbook pro 13in USB sockets seem worn and do not always work. the external memory In plug in does not always get found by the computer and when I changed the connecting cable, connectivity improved. Are the sockets worn. Do they need replacing?
