Q: My airplay icon is gone!

I use a PC (Win7) with iTunes for windows.  There used to be a nice airplay icon... it disappeared and I can't get it back by uninstalling iTunes.  Any suggestions?  I have a nice whole house audio system with airplay using apple TV... it would be nice to use it again through my PC.

    Howdy brucefromshenandoah,

We've an article (linked below) that details a number of steps which can help get the AirPlay icon to appear in iTunes again.

Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from iTunes on your computer

I also have no airplay available through iTunes, though see it fine on iPhone and IPad (i.e. can connect to Apple TV or Bose Airplay speaker). But no longer can I use iTunes to stream out to the airplay speakers. That article linked is pretty vacuous: "switch it off and on again...", not the most original of IT support suggestions, they all have indeed been restarted many times mind, to no avail.

    Areth, Btuce,

I am using iTunes 12.2 in the 64 bit version for windows, which version are you using? 32 bits or 64 bits?

Same here, 64bit iTunes 12.2, in Windows 8.1

What I have discovered since, and it's only extra annoying really, is that I can download a piece of software called Airfoil and it sees all my airplay speakers no bother. I also tried an airplay plug-in for MusicBee and it also sees all my airplay speakers (I've three by the way). So, the only piece of software I have running here that cannot see the Apple created standard Airplay protocol is the Apple created iTunes!! There has to be something wrong with iTunes, I wish the support page was a bit more informative and useful - I feel inclined to think it's something to do with the Bonjour service and the new iTunes not communicating properly perhaps - the latest Bonjour version is relatively old now.

It could be a problem only in the 64 bits version. I will do a test on a different pc with iTunes 12.2 but 32bits

I was out of hope, so I contacted the Apple support, they suggested me to see in my pc for the problem, I disabled my Firewall completely and Airplay was there again.

It is not completely ok, some time the Airplay disappear again and I have to disable again, for few seconds the firewall, iTunes is doing something that my firewall "don't like".

I think this new version of iTunes made some deep change that the firewall "don't trust" even when I told him several time to trust it.

Try to do the same, it could be also your problem.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.  I am running Win7 64 version.  I have disabled my firewall many times trying to get the airplay icon to come back to no avail.  Reinstalled it several times to no avail.  But the last update from iTunes did the trick at least for the time being.  I am on iTunes 12.2.1.16.  As soon as it updated the icon was back.

Just as another issue, I disabled the Internet Protocol Version 6 on my PC adaptors (both wired and wireless) for other issues I was having.  It seems that has helped other issues and perhaps this as well.  Although it was the not the direct fix, it may have contributed.
