all desktop files duplicated

I keep about six folders on my desktop rather than putting things into the document folder. Everything was fine until about a week ago when somehow each folder got copies of everything from every other folder. I thought I would just delete from each folder what did not belong there, but if I do that, it deletes from all folders, even the folder the things belonged in, leaving me with no copies of those files. Any suggestions?
