Hi. I am editing a guided meditation with garageband. Can you tell me how to insert silence? I tried splitting then adding space but this seems to cut off other parts of the recording.

you may be trying to drag an edge which will crop rather than move
after you split the region, click in the middle of the region you wish to move and drag to the right the amount of silence you require.
That is, I think, exactly what I have been doing. Does is make a difference if I work from the top or the lower editing portion of the screen?
I tried checking "lock automation curves". It's still deleting later portions of the recording. Any other suggestions?

if you mean the timeline, or the editor pane, work in the timeline (the top), the editor is more complex, doing different things depending on where you initially click.

that's only important if you've added volume/pan/effect automation; it forces the effect curve to move with the region
