Unfortunately that's one of those "how long is a piece of string" question. The battery life on an iPod (just as with any device using rechargeable batteries) reduces over time - specifically with the number of discharge/recharge cycles. The specs for the 4th gen shuffle state that it is capable of "up to 15 hours of audio playback when fully charged", but that will reduce with use. I've never noticed any difference in battery life for audiobook playback compared to other media types. As a rough guide, I have three iPod nanos in regular use (meaning that they get charged 2-3 a week); all still have original batteries:
Even though the two older ones have much reduced battery time, this performance is still somewhat in excess of expectations, based on the assumption that rechargeable battery performance should start to drop off dramatically at around 500 charging cycles and be dead before reaching 1000.
Obviously your Shuffle is a little different, lacking the nano's screen (typically a major drain on battery power). However, the Shuffle's smaller size means that it probably uses a smaller battery, offsetting any potential advantages of not having a screen.
