My iPod touch won't let me log in to iMessage

My iPod touch 4th gen doesn't let me use iMessage. I put in the correct info of my apple account and it still won't let me log in. I even turned off iMessage on my phone to see if that would help but still nothing. What should I do? i have old text messages that i want them to be deleted.
