My mac didn't come with the Apple Apps like Garage Band and Numbers

Ok so I have a MacBook Air 2012 Edition and it didn't come with the Mac Apps like Garage Band, My friend has an older computer and his did come with them. I don't know if its an apple thing or I'm doing something wrong. Also when I go into the App store it says I have to buy them!

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Perform the following, stopping with the first one which works:

1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept them into your Apple ID, do so.

2. Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.

3. Buy them.
