Seeq Spyware virus on my Mac - what do i do?

so, i thought my iMac wasnt in danger of getting a hijacker spyware virus, but it has. and not just that, but my MacPowerBook ALSO has this virus. it appears in a "search engine" called Seeq (www.seeq.com).

this has been ongoing for a few months, but just recently it has become quite bothersome and frequent.

although it doesnt happen EVERY time, it does happen often.
and here is the breakdown-- while i am browsing the web, i either click on a link, or type in a web address directly, it inserts a sub-directly in my toolbar (ie: www.yahoo.seeq.com) and then takes me to a home page of a "search engine." i have never clicked on anything in this screen. i always back out of it or re-enter the webpage address, or a different address.

there are many time though that i can never get to the page that i want to see. this can happen with websites big and small, known and unknown.

also, when i am on a page with a lot of banners or ads (ie: MySpace) there are time when one of the banners will be replaced by the web page Seeq.com. this has happened on sites ranging from MySpace to BBC to Chase Bank. secure and non-secure sites.

i never had this problem until i bought my MacBookPro. they had to give me the display computer, but erased and reformatted the machine before i took it. this problem started appearing on that machine almost out of the gate. shortly after i noticed it happening on my iMac (operating system 10.3.9).

i had shared files between the two machines, so i dont know if this is what could have done it. the other thing is though, this all happened right after a move to a new city. the apartment building we are in supplies us with free wireless, so i dont know if there could be something there. i bought my MacBookPro AFTER moving here, and i started using my iMac AFTER using my newly acquired MacBookPro.

just today, i went to my own blog and ALL of the images were replaced with deadlinks. when you click on them, it takes you directly to this Seeq page. now, i dont know what will happen if someone else goes to the page. i tried to look at my blog from a PC a few nights ago and it didnt even recognize the web address. it is here if you want to try and let me know what it does: http://mperfectdesign.blogspot.com/

from the research i have done, this has only been an issue on PCs, which makes it even harder to find out what i have to do to rid of this thing. i fear that i need to wipe clean both of my machines and start from scratch. but i hope someone will read this and give me an alternate route.

if i do a search on my hard drive for "seeq" i have NO FILES FOUND.

someone please please help a Mac user in need!

thanks so much.

Hi mperfect,

Welcome to the Apple.com discussion boards. As fas as I know, there are still no viruses or spyware in the wild for macs. It sounds like what is happening is a result of bad DNS results. Firstly, to confirm it's not your computer, check in your Network Perference panel to confirm that "seeq.com" is not listed in "Search Domains".

It's good you've mentioned you're getting free Internet access. It sounds like it's either delibrately configured to send some of the traffic to seeq.com, or that it's DNS server is vulnerable to cache poisoning. You should try manually specifying a DNS Server in your network preferences, then restarting.

You can find a list of public DNS servers at http://80.247.230.136/dns.htm - You should read the note at the top first. One of them, as an example, is provided by the well known mac site, spymac.com, and seems to work ok - 82.211.45.70 and 64.102.255.4 from cisco.com also seems good.

Please let us know how you go.
