why wont my phone upgrade to ios 8?

i have 4s, only an 8 gb, but even on itunes it says my phone is up to date, does not even say anything about 8. only 7.1. so usually even if the phone doesnt have enough space it lets you know, i checked for current updates says its up to date with 7.1

If you have a 4s, then you can upgrade to iOS 8. But not if you have a 4. I'm guessing that is what you have.

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.
