i got a message on my laptop that there was some security issue and asked to call 877 673 7179. The message won't go away.

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close Safari, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If the message reappears, temporarily disconnect the computer from the Internet and/or click here and run Adware Medic. If you need to download the tool, doing so may require a different web browser.

Great. Thank you. I will try this when I get home this evening. IO was getting it on Chrome as well as Safari. I was trying to open firefox but was not able to before work. Does that make any difference in terms of the solution?
Unless you tried to access the same sites on both browsers, it probably means that you need to use a method of removing adware.

Hi! I just received the same error message today. I ran the AdWare Medic and it found nothing. So far, I have not received the pop-up again. Very odd.
matthewsn: Adware Medic is one of those; the adware can also be removed manually.
sevatte: Your message was loaded directly from the Internet and not by adware. When addressing this issue, Adware Medic is only worth using if the popups appear repeatedly or in multiple browsers.
