i have lost loads of songs from my library. I used to be able to go into Preferences and click on them to download from iCould but that isn't an option in the latest version on iTunes. Can anyone help??

Did you sign up for the new Apple Music service when you upgraded? What you can do with the new iTunes depends upon which services you use.
no I never signed up, have they restricted my songs because I never signed up? I hope not because that's outrageous
I wonder if you are approaching this all wrong. Are the files really missing or is it only the reference in the library file catalog that is bad?

First determine if the media files are still present in the iTunes > Media folder. If they are not you will have to restore them from the backup you of course made of your computer before installing new software. If they are still there then try one of the following methods to rebuild the database which tells iTunes what media you have in your collection and where it is.

the music is still there on my iTunes on my phone but when i go into itunes on my Mac book i only have about 100 songs in my library. As I said before, there used to be a way to go into preferences and download songs held on your iCloud but that's not an option in the latest version of iTunes
I am having the same problem. All my purchased music is there, but everything I uploaded from CDs or other sources is gone. Not playlists at all. Endless hours of organizing gone. They are still on my iPhone and iPod, but they won't sync back to the computer. I'm very upset.

What you see in the iTunes window does the always show the total contents of your media collection. If this is the case you can rebuild the listing by using a pre-update library file. I am not seeing answers to my questions so I don't even know you even need to re-download anything.
