I set up Voicemail but cannot access it on my 3G iphone

I set up Voicemail but cannot access it on my 3G iphone. The people leaving a message hear my message but my phone doesn't tell me that I have a voice mail nor does my phone allow me to retrieve voice mails unless I dial my phone number. Even then, I don't know if I even have any voicemails! Help! Thanks
