Can I downgrade to mavericks anymore?
My macbook air 2009 with only 2 GBs of RAM really can't handle yosemite.

Do you have a Time Machine backup made of your MacBook Air made before you upgraded to Yosemite? If so, you can restore the entire system using that backup. See this article - OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system
