Mail Program doesn't maintain read mail

I am using a Macbook Pro (2011) with Yosemite. My issue is that my email (AOL) displays and remains in the email list on my mac for about a month. Then there is a gap of about 3 months where the list shows no emails. However emails after the 3 month period are listed. I also am experiencing this on my iPhone 5. Any suggestions? I have check my mail on a windows machine using Outlook and all the missing emails are there. Confused. Frank
