I cannot turn on my Imessage.

I have an iphone and I cannot turn Imessage on. I updated my operating system, tried to follow the directions but nothing works. Even the Verizon store couldn't get it on. They said I had to sign into Apple so I went home and did. Any ideas? Nothing works.
