How to access contact list from backup?

Had to do a new restore because my phone was malfunctioning. Genius bar told me i had to set up the phone as a new phone, which I did. I backed up my iphone before I did the restore, but I can't restore from backup because it may contain settings/apps that caused the problem in the first place. Now there's only a limited number of contacts that have returned when signing in with my apple account. Is there a way to restore all the contacts from my contact list on my previous backup?

Use whatever program you were using to sync your contacts and sync them back to the phone. Are you saying the only place your contacts existed is on the phone, so your backup is the only other copy of them? The iPhone backup is not designed to be accessed and data extracted from, it is for restoring a phone, all or none.
