How does one know if the adaptive firewall is running?

I don't see a process for afctl...so it must be something else right?

If adaptive firewall crashes is there some mechanism that will start it back up automatically? What if it does not launch properly at startup ( which I have seen a few times ) how would one try to have the system recover from that?
