how is the internall iphone shut off after headset is inserted

How does an iPhone detect a headset is plugged into it and mute the internal mic.

iPhone 5c, iOS 8.4

Within the headphone jack is a switch which senses when/if a headset is plugged in.

That is pretty much what I thought, but when just a plug only is inserted the internal iPhone jack the mic is not muted.???

Headsets with a microphone have an extra contact on the plug. If you insert a plug without that contact it will connect the phone's microphone contact to the ground contact. The phone will thus know that there is no external microphone connected, so will use its own microphone.
