Can I buy a iphone 6 in USA direct from Apple (not phone company contract) and use it in Australia?

I am traveling to USA later in the year, and I'd like to go to an Apple store to update my iPhone handset to a iphone 6.

Can I bring handset home, add my SIM card, and use it in Australia with no problems?

Only if you buy one that is unlocked such as the T-Mobile or an Apple unlocked model. The warranty is only honored in the USA, so you would not be able to get covered repairs in Australia should you need it.
