unlocking iphone

I brought a phone from a friend that didn't know what the passcode was to it well m trying to reset the phone so I can use it but its saying I have to unlock the phone before I can restore it I can I get around that so I can restore the phone to use it as my own?

iPhone 4, iOS 8, AT&T

Have your friend do that for you or return your money. You cannot unlock it. Only your friend can.

If it's just the passcode lock, Recovery mode should help.
