Q: Taptic feedback on Apple Watch fails and instead produces a high pitched, static sounding noise

Model: Apple Watch Sport 42mm Space Gray Aluminum with watchOS 1.0.1

Date of purchase: June 9, 2015 (Online Store, Sydney, Australia)

Date problem occurred: July 1, 2015

Issue:

  • on all instances when taptic feedback should be produced by the Watch's Taptic Engine, it fails completely (not just too low)
  • instead it produces a high pitched, static sounding noise
  • issue persists across apps and use cases involving taptic feedback (Siri, alarm clock, phone call, notifications, etc.)
  • never been dropped or interacted with water

Troubleshooting steps I've already tried:

  • unpair and repair
  • reset by erase all contents and settings
  • reset sync data
  • repair with two different iPhones
  • restore Apple Watch from a backup
  • set up Apple Watch as a new device

I took it back to Apple Store Sydney. Two employees at the Genius Bar said this is their first time seeing a problem like this. They took my Apple Watch case and promised to replace it within three weeks since this model is not in stock. I wonder if anyone here is facing the same problem too?

Apple Watch, watchOS 1.0.1, null

I had this issue too since upgrading to watchos 2. Very weak vibration and a high pitched buzzing sound. Thought it was broken but then powered it off and on again and now operation seems normal and fine. I am keeping an eye on it but so far so good. Odd.

I also had this issue. Powering off and back on fixed it for now. Was worried the watch was broken because it had been making a really weird, gravelly sound instead of the normal taptic feedback.

Same exact issue here, and I have the exact same watch. It started today, making a sound similar to sand being rubbed against glass instead of a "vibrating" hum. I figured it was broken, but after reading this thread, I powered the watch off and back on, and it went back to normal. Thanks for the tip, folks!

Huh. Mine failed a few days ago, and neither me nor the Apple Store techs could've imagined it being a software issue. It got sent off for inspection, and I was given a new one today (rather than them returning my old one—the serial number is different).

    Very odd.
