How to remove a screen protector.

I bought a screen protector for my iPad about six months ago, and last week it came time. My iPad fell face front in the kitchen and the glass died (broken). I got a new protector and I can't take the old one off. I try my fingers and everything! It won't let me remove it. I don't think my iPad has a permanent broken screen protector now...😢
