My 2008 iMac crashes with weird colors on the screen

Hello

Lately my iMac has been 'crashing'. It locks up then the screen turns a weird orange. I have to manually turn off the computer, wait about a minute then re-boot. Everything comes back fine including opening the windows that I was in before the crash.

It's only happening once or twice a month if that often. Anyone got any ideas what's wrong or going wrong?

Thanks

Allen

You could be experiencing the beginning of a hardware failure. If you could, please post an EtreCheck report of your computer, then we can see how it is configured and also look for any obvious issues. You can get EtreCheck and learn about it by clicking http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

You also may need to run an Apple Hardware Test, this application resides on disc 2 of the original DVDs that shipped with your computer. If you no longer have those then you have a couple of options, first is to contact AppleCare and for a nominal fee purchase replacements. Option 2 is to take the machine to an Apple Authorized Service Provider who can professionally diagnose the computer.

The only obvious thing I see is the computer is using some swap RAM which means the computer likely does not have enough. I don' t think this would have any graphical effect though. 4GB of RAM is not a lot by today's standards to run Yosemite but I have a tough time recommending putting money into a almost 8 year old computer.

At this point I'd recommend running Apple Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. The reason for running multiple times is AHT does not always catch errors after the first or second pass, however when it does they are correct. If you find errors then you may want to consider getting a new machine. If no errors appear then I'd suggest taking the computer to an AASP who can professionally diagnose it with more sophisticated tools not available to the public.

Hi All

Thanks much for all your help. I went to the Apple Store the other day and had a nice talk with the rep. I showed him the pictures as well.

His suggestion was same as all of yours, dump this 2008 iMac and get a new one. I plan to do that.

However! There may be some problems and I'd like to know how to solve them. I'll use Pages and Numbers apps for example. Apparently I have 2 versions of each on my computer. Numbers 2.3 and 3.5.3; Pages 4.3 and 5.5.3.

This has caused me many problems in that documents created with one version won't open in another version. I posted about this before and was told to just click on the document and it would open the proper app. Before I would open the App first.

Now this new iMac will have everything new. My old one is so obsolete. How can I make sure all my documents will open on the new iMac?

Thanks

Allen
