You can use your iPhone's number or an email address or Apple ID.

No. The iPad is not a cellular telephone. Its cellular telephone number is not used for anything other than to keep your accounting straight with your cellular carrier.
Remember iMessage can be performed from an iPad regardless of whether it even has a cellular capability (or is WiFi only).
