Will the MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2015) run directly from AC power when plugged in?

I recently bought the 13" Early 2015 MacBook Pro and was prepared to use it as a desktop. I want to know if I plug it in 24/7, would the machine draw power directly from AC and would bypass the battery?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Yes and no. If you keep the MBP connected to AC for a prolonged period of time, the battery will be charged to 100% by the OSX and provide power to the MBP at the same time. Then the OSX will stop charging the battery and supply power only to the MBP. The battery then will slowly discharge, as if it were on the shelf outside the MBP. When the charge level drops to about 95%, the OSX will again start charging the battery as well as providing power to the MBP. This cycle will be repeated as long as you have the charger continuously connected to an AC outlet.

Should you do this, at least once per month run the MBP with just the battery power to about the 40% charge level and then you can resume the above mentioned routine. A lithium battery needs to be 'excercised' periodically for maximum performance and battery life.

POWERING ON WITHOUT BATTERY ON THE MACBOOK PRO 13 RETINA 13 EARLY 2015 with NORMAL CHARGER

First of all I have a breakthrough with this topic. I had a swollen battery and had to disconnect the battery for safety reasons even though it was working properly.

NOW TO POWERING on without the battery and only with the external AC supply. OF COURSE IT WORKS !!

However please note my experience has been limited to the macbook pro 13 retina A1502 , early 2015 only .not that it should not work with later macbook pro 's. However i cannot guarantee it follows the same concept.

In principle as per apple tech support , battery removal should not hinder macbook pro power on with the battery physically disconnection from the logic motherboard for any macbook. however the performance might be impacted.

I observed the following aspects, after removing the battery and reattaching all connections as before . you can even put the cover back. no issues. the macbook seems lighter now !!

A) you need to use the right power charger for powering on the macbook pro. For example if you use the smaller power rated charger for the macbook air it would not power on !

B) Once battery is removed an SMC reset is mandatory ( control+option+shift +power key for 5 secs) is mandatory without which the keyboard +trackpad would not be recognised at all.or else you need to have an external keyboard and mouse ( bluetooth ones for eg). however please note you can do this only with a HEALTHY BATTERY CONNECTED ONLY. once you disconnect the battery an SMC reset is needed again.

i can now run my computer with external keyboard and mouse and run it with external supply.

C) Do not expect to run the macbook as it would run normally . I guess the SSD and processor run at almost half the speed ,it would be interesting to see the comparison though.

i am awaiting my battery replacement .

Thats my bit for research for about a week or so as i could not find a clear answer to the above question so far on the net.

Yes.

You can keep the computer plugged in while in use.

Keep the computer plugged in whenever possible.

If you keep the computer always plugged in, make sure that at least twice a month

run it on battery until battery charge level drops to about 50-40%.

Please don’t discharge the battery completely. Discharging battery completely will reduce battery health.
