Q: iPhone Erase and Re-setup?

I am about to set up a replacement iPhone with same number as the one I lost. I locked the lost phone but want to ERASE now before I set up new phone. Will doing this affect the new phone? What is the right sequence of actions?

I'm sorry to hear that your iPhone was lost. It sounds like you want to erase it using iCloud, and then activate your new iPhone.

Your new iPhone won't be affected if you erase the lost device, and you don't have to erase it before setting up the new one. Here's what happens if you erase your device using iCloud:
Erase your device. To prevent anyone else from accessing the data on your missing device, you can erase it remotely. When you erase your device, all of your information (including credit or debit cards for Apple Pay) will be deleted from the device, and you won't be able to locate it using Find My iPhone. After you erase a device, you can't track it. If you remove the device from your account after you erase it, Activation Lock will be turned off. This allows another person to activate and use your device.
