A 30-pin connector.

You can use any speakers or amplifier that accepts a 3.5mm jack input (or can be converted to a 3.5mm headphone).

The iPod dock connectors usually have a 'line level' output that means the volume cannot be adjusted via the iPod, instead you use the volume on the speakers. If you go out via the headphone connector the volume level can be controlled via the iPod.

You don't need a dock, but it can be useful for providing an easy charging connector, I prefer a simple headphone connector with a dock charging cable - you can search for playlists without being tied to the dock or interrupting playback.

You may find official Apple 'universal docks' still around they look like this one…

Apple stopped making them so be careful where you purchase from if you chose to get one.
