Q: Computer crashes when accessing raid 5

Since my upgrade from 10.10.3 to 10.10.4, my system crashes when I'm accessing my raid through Lightroom or trying a disk repair from DiskWarrior on my Mac Pro. OS X 10.10.4 is not stable.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), 3.2 GHZ, 32 GB RAM

    How is RAID setup?

    Apple RAID card?

Using RAID via Apple Disk Utility?

    Third-party RAID software like SoftRAID?

IS RAID data only (not boot drive)?

So restore from a backup clone from before the crashes and start with a minimal clean install of 10.10.4 also and add back one at a time.

Updates can and are known to "break things" but are you sure there were no errors or problems before?

I would rely on CCC first before updating and then run DW on the clone. CCC also has feature to do checksum, so use that too.

Based on the kernel extensions present at the "scene of the crime", that does seem to be directly related to disk I/O, not to RAM Memory or other items in the Operating System.

The troubling thing in that report is how many third-party extensions are loaded that might have modified the standard software in some fashion, and may be contributing to the instability:

    com.aladdin.kext.aksfridge 1.0.2

    com.kensington.trackballworks.driver 1.1.0

    com.owc.driver.Accelsior 1.0 b2

    com.Newer-tech.kext.MAXPower_SAS_6G_RAID 1.5.1

If you can run your system without some of them, it is worth trying to uninstall them and check the stability again, or try operating is Safe Mode (which does not load any third-party extensions, but may be a bit slower). Another thing to check is whether any of the Vendors of these extensions has a recent update.

    Hi Grant,

I tried it in Safe Mode, and it crashed while browsing photos in Lightroom CC2015.1. It didn't give me a panic report.

Mac Pro has Error Correcting Code memory, so this is not a memory problem.

Safe mode does not load any third party drivers, so it is not crashing because of those.

That leaves unresolved Bugs in Mac OS X, or corruption in the specific image of Mac OS X loaded on your drive. So your next step would be to re-Install Mac OS X. No need to erase at this point, you can just re-install over your existing Mac OS X. Any modules that are damaged or out of date will be replaced with the new ones, and barring pre-existing Directory damage, nothing else will be changed.

Re-installed Yosemite 10.10.4. Still crashes. If anything, it seems even more fragile.

    Still a Page fault?

    Still at:

    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

             com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily(2.0)   ??

Then you may need to make an appointment at the genius Bar to have your Mac tested and evaluated. No charge for the evaluation.
