Q: Why does FCPX have to re-render my clips?

I am using the latest version of FCPX  (10.2.1). I started noticing this issue either when I updated to one of the recent versions or when I updated to Yosemite, I can't remember.

I am editing on my new Macbook Pro and the project Library is located on an external drive. Every time I close FCP and re-open it, every clip that has an effect applied (which is most of them) shows that it needs to be rendered again. The storage locations for my media and cache are set to "in Library".

This is also happening when I edit on my Mac Pro ( same FCP version, same storage settings) while editing from an external drive.

If I am editing a Library that is located on my main boot drive, there is no re-rendering issue.

This is a new phenomenon. I have been using FCPX for long time and this only started happening within the past couple of months.

Any ideas on what is going on?

I don't have this issue, sorry, can't replicate the behavior. We have two FCPX seats that send and receive all files to the same remote drive. Our remote drive is a NFS volume, whatever that means.

For the project to be forced to re-render, the original render files have either been deleted on shutdown or startup or moved to a location that FCPX cannot find or the requirements for the renders have changed, say, the project paramaters have been changed. There re probably other reasons, those are just the fist I can think of.

You can determine if the renders have been discarded by opening the trash before you launch FCPX.You can determine if the location has changed by searching carefully for render files that might might be hidden on your main drive. They might be in the wrong Library.

Try some sleuthing on your end and we'll try to help you figure it out. Have you searched the forum for "re-render"?

David- Thanks so much for your reply.

First, I have searched these forums and the interweb in general but haven’t found any references to my specific problem.

The really confusing thing is that there is some serious inconsistency going on here.

In the past 3 days I’ve been exclusively working on one particular project. (To be clear, the Library was originally created on one hard drive and then I moved it to another external drive to continue working on it. It has been living there for several weeks.)

On day 1, I had to re-render the whole thing 3 different times ( when I first opened it that day, again when FCPX crashed, and again when my external drive was accidentally unplugged).

Day 2, only a few clips had to be re-rendered when I first opened the project.

Day 3, only a few clips required re-rendering on first launching FCP. I had to re-start my computer for something unrelated, and when I opened FCP again, the last half of the clips in my project had to be re-rendered.

On your recommendation, I checked out the contents of my trash. The only thing FCP related is a folder called “Recovered files”. Within that folder are sub-folders named "(A Document Being Saved By Final Cut Pro), (A Document Being Saved By Final Cut Pro 2), (A Document Being Saved By Final Cut Pro 3), and the folders continue all the way to #14. And those folders are all empty.

Regarding changes to project parameters, I’m not changing anything as far as I know. I’m just editing clips, applying effects, and rendering them. I quit FCPX, I open it back up and…..more re-rendering!

If you can think of anything else for me to investigate, please let me know.

    Thanks again!

Are these effects custom effects? Did you create the project originaly on another Mac?

Russ- The effects are mostly 3rd party plugins like Magic Bullet Looks, FilmConvert Pro, Neat Video Noise Reduction, etc.
I apply them and then tweak the parameters within the plugins.

Yes, the projects that give me problems are ones in which the Library was created on a hard drive connected to my Mac Pro, and then the Library was moved to a different hard drive to continue working on it using my Macbook Pro.

After having to re-render my project 3 times today ( first when I opened up FCPX this morning, and twice after FC crashed)  I just wanted to bump this.

It seemed as though David and Russ were at least pointing me towards some possibilities to explore.

It's so very frustrating and time-wasting. There MUST be an solution, right?

I have the exact same issue with the exact same inconsistencies.  On restart sometimes it finds the previously rendered files, other times it doesn't and has to re-render them.  There doesn't seem to be any correlation between between the types of clips/effects that need to re-render or the shut down procedure (crash vs normal quit & restart).  This is particularly brutal for me since one of the sequences it consistently needs to re-render is a multi-layer build that takes over an hour to render.

Sorry to hear you are having issues too, Nick.

If you ever figure out a solution, please resurrect this thread and let me know. I'll do the same!

I Have had this issue, but only when I use third party effects, in my case when I use MLut. This does not happens when I use FCPX effects. So my guess is that the creators of those plugins do not update their products.

Thanks for your reply innocentius. I suppose that might be the case, but I'm still confused about the inconsistent nature of the problem. Sometimes parts or most of the project has to be re-rendered and then occasionally (very rarely) NONE of it has to be re-rendered.

Did anyone ever get any further with this? SO glad to have found the thread, but sadly we still seem to be stuck with the problem.

Mine here is particularly bad with Generator Clips. No matter if they have all rendered out during a session, if I close down and then open the project again, it will start the whole process again!

    Arrhhhhhh! Why?

I've just updated my iMac, so it's all singing, all dancing and VERY clean. I was so hoping this might go away, but it hasn't.

Any proper Apple bods able to help?

I'm experiencing the same thing. MacBook Pro, last year's model, running Sierra. I have FCPFX White Balance plugin on my clips, and that's it. When I quit FCPX and relaunch, the whole bloody thing has to re-render.

VERY ANNOYING, even on the top of line of MBPro!

    Where is your cache stored?

Switch off background rendering. You don't need it with a top of line MBPro.

My MBP drive is the cache. As far as turning off backg rendering, I have to have things rendered to test and see them in real time. For transitions, I guess you're saying just render those manually? For global clip changes (white balance, color grading), just test render a portion??

I don't see a good workflow where I'm not able to view my movie as intended as I work.
