AIM keeps crashing on my iMac...

Question

AIM keeps crashing on my iMac...

I wasnt sure where to put this but on my iMac AIM keeps unexpectingly crashing... this is pretty bad for me seeing as in I just formed a band and am missing important messages from people becuase I wont even know who sent it to me when the second it pops up AIM crashes. I could be doing the simplist thing as typing a message or looking at a profile or doing nothing when it happens. I saw nothing on the AIM site that could help.... does anyone know what I can do?

Have you checked your internet connections? Your DNS? Do you lose your browser connections?

Chris I use the AIM embedded in Netscape which NEVER crashes. I had the exact same problem w/the stand alone AIM app.

Strongly recommend that you use Netscape's embedded AIM.

There may be some way you can keep iChat open to receive AIM messages. Your AIM buddies are transferred over to iChat. However, you can't use/get into AIM's chat rooms using iChat.
You may wish to crosspost in the iChat Forums if you don't want to use Netscape's AIM.

What exactly are you doing to make it crash? Is it crashing immediately upon opening the program, or are you trying to do something which makes it mad? Elaborate on your problem so we can help.

it pretty much just randomly crashing even when I am not even using it. Sometimes i might just be typing, or I get a message, or viewing a profile, or making eye contact with the program itself and poof aim as unexpectly shut down

You might try looking into Adium. It's a good, third-party software that allows you to connect to all of your IMs in a single program - AIM, MSN, yahoo, ICQ, Jabber, etc. It does chats too, though I don't use that often enough to know how well.

It does not do IRC. There are separate good clients for that such as Snak or Conversation.

I have a single question. Do you have a mighty mouse? I have found that when you try and scroll with AIM (down your buddy list, or in someone's profile) that it WILL crash on you.

But I agree with the previous post. Go with Adium. I love it and have not encountered many problems with it.

I have done some observing and it has come apparent it seems it is actualy the mighty mouse scroll ball. Is there any way to prevent this without using a different program or avoiding the mighty mouse scroll ball?

I forgot to add............

I have been playing around with Adium all week testing it out especially with the AIM chat rooms.

I gave it 2

& 5

I threw away my stand alone AIM app. I still use Netscape's AIM though because I use its browser a lot.

If you want to get into the AOL Chat rooms using ADIUM you will need to download this nifty FREE software called More Internet
