Q: Maps on Yosemite doesn't show location when on home wifi

For about a week now, maps on my MBA does nothing when I click the arrow button next to the search box when I am on my home wifi. Of course, what used to happen was the map would be oriented to the current location of the mac. Maps on my wife's MBA works as designed. Furthermore, the iCloud cannot locate my MBA. iCloud reports my MBA as "Online, No Location Available". My MBA was connected to a different wifi network yesterday and Maps was able to locate my position without issue as was iCloud.

This leads me to the conclusion that something is amiss on the MBA itself.

The issue started when I deleted then re-created my home wifi profile on my MBA in an attempt to resolve an issue where my MBA was reporting its location as my old home address 100 miles away. I relocated a month ago and brought my 3TB Time Capsule with me. I re-created the wifi profile on my MBA, renamed my SSID, and reported the new location to SkyHook as per some instructions I found somewhere on this forum. Thankfully, I can rest easy knowing that I should be able to locate my MBA if it were ever lost or stolen (providing the culprit isn't a neighbor), but I'd still like to have it function as designed.

I welcome any advice or suggestions.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Thank you for the direction.

Here are the test results. Unless otherwise stated, all peripherals are disconnected from the laptop. Also, this laptop has a single account and the Guest account is inactive.

When in safe mode, while graphics don't completely render, both Maps and iCloud can locate my MBA.

After reboot (not in safe mode), both Maps and iCloud can locate my MBA but Maps can do so only after iCloud is successful.

Upon connecting my external HDMI display neither iCloud nor Maps can locate my MBA. This issue occurs regardless of the lid state (open or closed).

So as soon as you disconnect the external display, Maps starts working again? What happens if you connect the display while in safe mode?

No, once the display is disconnected, the problem persists. This morning, I have re-entered safe mode as I had done previously (no display or peripherals attached) and am finding that neither maps nor iCloud can locate my Mac. In testing this morning, I find that the location services icon in the menu will eventually show up (+10 minutes) but after still more time, neither application is able to determine the Mac's location. I am quickly reaching the conclusion that this is an intermittent problem. Before placing the original post on in this forum, I had reloaded the OS and restored all settings and data from my time machine backup. I think that today I will restore the OS but selectively restore data from my backup - omitting settings - and see where I am then.
