Black Screen, Need Password Entered

Hi everyone,

I have a 4th generation iPod. Recently the screen has turned back, and stays black-the Apple logo never appears even if I try the iPod reset (hold the home key and top button for 10 seconds). I was told that it would be cheaper to buy a new iPod then repair this one. However, I would like the music off of this iPod. When I plug it into the computer, the computer recognizes the iPod/iTunes but is unable to do anything until the password is entered on the iPod. This, can not be done though because the constantly screen is black. Does anyone know a way around this? How can one go about unlocking the password/iPod when the screen is not functioning?

Thank you.

Lisa

No, you have to restore and thus erase the iPod. I wold try a restore to see if you have a software problem:

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

For how to restore:

iTunes: Restoring iOS software

To restore from backup see:

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $199 for a64 GB 4G and $99 for the other 4Gs. They do not fix yours.

You can do it at an Apple store by making an appointment:

Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

or send it in to Apple. See:
