Lost music on old ipod mini

I found my very old ipod mini that had about 400 songs on it. I tried to sync it to itunes the other day but it erased it and put the new music on my mini. Is there any way at all to retrieve the old music? Oh pretty please tell me I can. I'm so sad. =(
