With certain email accounts when I delete it on my iphone it stays on my computer and with others it deletes on both my iphone and my computer. I know there are differences between POP mail and IMAP mail but truthfully I don't need to know the technicalities I just need to know HOW I stop mail from getting deleted on my computer when I delete it from my iphone.

The reason why your mail gets deleted on both your phone and your computer is because it is all linked together. So if you were to go onto another computer and delete an e-mail it would delete on your computer and phone. So it does not matter were you delete the mail, it is all on one server.

An IMAP account will delete across all devices connected to them. You cannot alter that. If the issue is with an IMAP account don't delete messages you wish to access later. Simple. Exchange accounts also work more or less the same way (which is what your work account likely is).
POP deleted from the server upon download if the client (app) is set up for that. On the iPhone open the Settings App > Mail,Contacts,Calendars > <the account in question> > and look for settings along the line of mail behavior or server settings. It varies a little from vendor to vendor. Deleting mail from one device using POP typically does not delete from other devices. However, the mail client may be deleting it from the server upon download. that is what you are looking to prevent.
POP is a lousy mail system for managing on multiple devices. I'd strongly recommend getting off of it if possilbe (and getting over deleting email if you actual plan to use it later.
BTW: Understanding WHY is the first step to any intelligent problem solving. If you do not understand why the accounts behave as they do, you likely will never get this situated to your liking.
No, it doesn't help me. I did state I'm not that interested in WHY it does it. I can appreciate the reason but it doesn't do that for all my emails. With some of my email accounts I can delete it from my iphone and it still stays on my computer. What I want to know is HOW do I stop it from deleting from my computer? Is there a way when you set up the email coming to your phone so that it doesn't delete it from my computer or are you saying that there isn't a way to do this. For example I have a hotmail account which when I delete from my phone stays on my computer but my work emails when I delete from my phone they delete from my computer. Why do they behave differently and is there a way to make them behave the same?
Thank you for your reply which was helpful if rather condescending. Just for the record I only said I wasn't interested in the why not that I couldn't appreciate it. If I had to understand the why of everything I use or do I would probably never leave the house. Like most people I am mostly interested in how to make something do what I want. Knowing that I can't do anything about it answers my question.

I disagree but perhaps we can just "agree to disagree" on this point. For example when the light is flashing on my microwave I honestly don't need to know why it is doing it (i'm not saying knowing isn't helpful) but that I really need to know how to fix it. As I said your response was very helpful and perfectly answered my question. I apologize if you found my tone to also be condescending. I am relatively new at this and I was merely appealing to the "hive mind" for a possible fix. I am rather tech challenged and was afraid that. like in the first response from the Pro Mac, my basic question would either be ignored or I would get a response tech laden that just wouldn't be helpful either. I'm with you rhuttnyc, I really don't care why it doesn't work anymore when I was a kid I would spend hours or days figuring out this junk. I have the same problem but the other way. I want to delete all my mail off the server but leave it on all my devices. I don't want my personal information sent or received sitting on some server so I do what I'm told by the security experts and remove it. With IMAP it's all for one and NONE for all, if I use POP it's who ever gets the message first so in theory I have to drag my laptop, ipad and phone behind me and then play message message who's got my message. Unless I'm missing something here at the end of the day...it doesn't w3rk yet.
Maybe this will help, I setup my mail as pop accounts, so I can delete mail off the server only and not everything else. I use my laptop to collect my mail using mozilla thunderbird where I can categorize, save and manually backup groups of messages I need as independent files with an eml extension. Then I go online and delete them off the server. And the iphone and ipads, they just don't know how to make them do mail the right way yet but if someone has the answer I'll give it a try.
I just want to mention that my email security and organizational needs are probably more demanding than most peoples as I send and receive personal files, records and invoices categorized by customer, vendor or institution. For this I use a secure server, not gmail or the like, but I still delete the files from that server at the end of the day. I won't say its the best system but I have one, it's quick, easy and it works for me.
