Q: I get disconnected after a while when I try to AirPlay music from iTunes (v12.2) to Apple TV (v7.2)

When I try to directly AirPlay music from iTunes (12.2) on my MacBook Air (v10.10.4) to Apple TV I get disconnected after a while (about 30 seconds to 10 minutes of playing song). My network is absolutely fine and Apple TV has full strength connection.

When I AirPlay from iPhone 5, everything is working fast and absolutely correct. On the other side video AirPlay mirroring (directly from OS X - not iTunes) from my MacBook to Apple TV is absolutely fine and fast too. It looks like there is some problem in iTunes.

Edit: I noticed volume control of iTunes works only sometimes (more like randomly) when I want to lower down volume on Apple TV.

Does anyone experience the same issue?

Apple TV (3rd generation), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), iTunes 12.2

    Hello Cak3,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you are experience an interruption while using AirPlay to stream content from iTunes on your Mac to your Apple TV. I also understand that you are experiencing no issues while using AirPlay Mirroring or while using AirPlay from your iPhone.

You have done a great job of isolating the issue already, but to continue troubleshooting, I would suggest checking your Wi-Fi router settings against the recommended settings outlined in the attached information below.

Get help using AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If your playback is interrupted, or you have network lag

You might notice these issues if you have a weak Wi-Fi signal or interference from a different device, like a microwave or baby monitor. Try these steps:

    1. Make sure that you're using the recommended settings for your Wi-Fi router.
    2. Move or turn off other devices that might cause interference.
    3. Try connecting your Apple TV directly to the router using an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi.

Some apps might stop AirPlay when you lock your device or put your device to sleep.

    Have a great day

WMM is on. I am 99% sure that the problem is not in my network.

Trying to play with it I found out, that the problem happens only sometimes. What I noticed:

1 - When I play with volume control in iTunes, and Apple TV is not responding to volume changes (it is actually responding to everything else, song moving, song skipping) I got disconnected after a while (about 30 secs to 1 min)

2 - But now I found that volume control (If I shut down iTunes, turn it on, shut down, ..., turn it on) starts working (volume control is responding and I will never get disconnected and from that time it continues working absolutely properly), when I start from a new day, I have same issues

3 - If my Apple TV is shuted down (iTunes is still running), and I start to Airplay something, item 1 is happening again (sometimes). That is why I thing the problem is more in Apple TV bug than in iTunes

4 - When Apple TV is running and iTunes is running and they were "paired" correctly (I mean item 2 is happening, it will never jumps to behavior that is written in item 2)

    - I have not found correct pattern when these things happening with 100% sure and what is influencing what (it might not be the thing that i am closing my iTunes, it might be different thing)

    - I believe (in probability) the problem is bug in Apple TV (60%), iTunes (39%), Network (1%), it used to work with older software on the very same network (I am not interested in reinstalling to older softwares)

(sorry for my English, I am not native speaker and I don't live in English speaking country)

    Greetings Cak3,

Thank you for the extra information. Let’s go ahead and try to troubleshoot your Apple TV as well. I would first suggest restarting your Apple TV and then testing the issue. The information on how to complete this process can be found in the attached article below.

How to restart your Apple TV - Apple Support

If after testing, the issue continues, I would suggest restoring your Apple TV. This will completely take the Apple TV back to its factory settings and you will need to set up your Apple ID, Wi-Fi network, and Home Sharing again after the process completes.

    Cheers

Thank you for your help but of course it didn't help.

I am sorry. I am absolutely exhausted from trying to make my devices work. I think I tried everything. Only thing I can do is to return back to older OS in Apple TV and/or older iTunes version to try if this is really Apple fault. But I have no idea if this is possible on Apple TV and I don't have also time to solve these issues. I thought when I went from Microsoft/Google to Apple that everything will work.

Thank you for your patience. I think nothing will help me. Maybe later updates.
