Training for the newly blind or visually impaired

My 48 year old brother has just become blind from high blood pressure. Needless to say, he has not many choices of what to do during his day but devour books on tape and work out in the garage...I'd love for him to be able to use his phone on is own again and have an iPad for other activities. I'm looking to get both an i6 and iPad w/ siri so he can do so.

Does Apple have any financial assistance for the blind and training for them? We live in Silicon Valley, so hopefully something at the Apple campus in Mountain View or????

His 49th birthday is tomorrow and I'd love to have good news for him...his spirits are OK, but I would love to have somethings for him to look forward to during his days without sight....

Many thanks!

I don't believe Apple offers financial assistance. However, it may be worth checking with your local association for the blind and visually impaired if this is going to be used as an assistive technology device. In terms of training, Apple does offer in-store workshops. The workshops vary by store and time. I remember hearing that one would be happening at my local store on vision, I think when iOS 7 came out. I am on the East Coast and don't currently see any vision workshops right now, but checking around some other states I did see some. So check it your local location. You could also look at doing a personal set up at an Apple store. The user guide is also pretty good about explaining how voiceOver works and the gestures. You can always ask specific questions on here as well. -AJ
