Q: Deactivate old number? Activate new number? Messages/Facetime

I recently moved from Panama to the US. I have a T-mobile iPhone 5S and have removed the old sim card from Panama and installed a T-mobile sim card in the US. Obviously I have a new number now. My problem is that Messages and FaceTime still show my old number. Under Settings/Phone it shows the new number and I can send messages and use Face Time via my email address. I've tried to turn messages and FaceTime off and restart the phone but it still says "waiting for activation". Could I deregister my old number with apple and maybe solve this problem? I also read that after a few weeks the old number might automatically be deregistered because I'm not using it. I've also changed my personal contact info to reflect my new number. Any help would be appreciated.
