Best browser for my iMac 10.6.8

I have an old iMac 10.6.8.

I was using Chrome, but that keeps making the system crash--says I need to upgrade.

I can't get Firefox to work.

So I've gone back to using Safari, which will only allow me to have one of my two gmail accounts open at one time.

What to do?

Thank you!

Check your ethernet network settings as well as your DNS settings.

Make a note of your current DNS settings & try the following:

Mapping for the following OS’s 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8/10.9 /10.10.x

System Preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS. Click the plus sign ➕ & enter these numbers:

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

Restart your comp & try the websites again.

my firewall is off.

Turn it on.

Set up a another account (test account) to see if the same problems crop up. Need to rule out system wide problems.

Regarding the dropbox, I can see the icon, but it's grayed out--nothing to link to.

After resolving your previous problems and if Dropbox is still acting up either uninstall & reinstall it. Or visit its Help Center.

LAST RESORT

Wipe out your HD & reinstall the OS.

Please keep us advise of the outcome. If you need further help will send out a Bat Call.

Repairing your disk from the Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard DVD

Boot up from your Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.

Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.

Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.

Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.

If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

My dropbox has also become inaccessible from my desktop.

If the above does not resolve your Dropbox problem, please provide "details" of what happens when you attempt to access Dropbox.

By inaccessible do you mean its icon is no longer in your Finder menu?

You might want to reconsider using Chrome as your browser after reading this: Google Chrome Listening In To Your Room Shows The Importance Of Privacy Defense In Depth.

Google is known to "phone home" with users data as was found out with this new Google Photos service: Google Photos may be free — but there's still a cost.

Just some food for thought.

You really don't need Chrome. It is a memory hog of the first order. But, I cannot understand why Firefox is a problem, I find it the best as far as my 10.6.8 is concerned, even though I am also a user of Safari.

Try to update your 10.6.8 using the 10.6.8 combo update and then try again to download Firefox. Firefox is way ahead of Safari in terms of security.

Thank you.

I downloaded and installed the combo update, and successfully downloaded and installed Firefox.

However, now, whether I'm in Chrome, Safari or Firefox, I can't "get into" most websites I use--including this one! (I'm writing this from a laptop that does not have the combo update installed.)

When I get to the sign in screen from any of the websites I visit, I receive this message:

I don't know if the current problems with Adobe flash are connected in any way. Is the https service on? Have you checked your firewall.

Here are some notes dealing with someone with a similar problem.

Can you tell us what version you currently have installed for each of the browsers.

Thank you for the star.

Your Firefox vertsion 39.0 is fine.

Your Chrome looks okay (I hope you didn't download it from CNet or Softonic).

Your Safari should be 5.1.10 (6534.59.10)

If you got Chrome from anywhere but Google, let us know. You might consider also downloading and applying an etrecheck program and publishing the results here.

Thank you.

Downloaded Chrome from Google.

Wanted to add, when I try to access one of the aforementioned sites while in Safari, the program quits "unexpectedly" and then sends a long report.

When I try to access one of the sites from Chrome, I receive a "This webpage is not available. ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED"

My dropbox has also become inaccessible from my desktop.

I see nothing in the etre check report to suggest you have any problems worth noting. I'm wondering what extensions you have from Chrome in particular. Make a note of all the extensions you have for all of the browsers. Then turn them all off and try the browsers again one by one. If you start to get success with the a browser try adding that browser's extensions one by one until the troublemaker surfaces. It is all I can suggest I'm afraid.

My system says that the Ethernet isn't connected, but it is connected to the airport and cable box.

The steps you propose are a bit advanced for me--I'm not really sure what you're suggesting so I better start over; wipe everything out. Fortunately I just did this last August, and haven't accumulated too much new data/info, so... Still a bummer.

This is my first foray into this support community -- was suggested to me by Apple Support -- and I'm so impressed. You all could rule the world!

Thank you.
