Yosemite smtp outgoing mail help

Would really love some help ! My outgoing mail smtp is not sending. I can receive mail. It just stopped ? I have only had a mac for 6 months it has always had intermittent mail problems. i usually reset it or re enter the password and that usually works.

I have gone through all the support comments here and I am proficient at doing them but nothing seems to work.

I even did the recommendation below to no avail.

Quit mail

Open up Finder

In the Finder menu bar select Go > Go to folder

type in ~/Library and click Go (on my kb the "~" is next to the left shift key)

Open the folder Mail

Open the folder V2

Open the folder MailData

Double click to open Accounts.plist (should open in TextEdit)

Find the block of data that contains the offending mail account

Find the line within this block that says <key>UserAllowsInsecureAuthentication</key>

Change the line below this from <false/> to <true/>

Quit TextEdit

Restart mail


I need a Pro who can simply explain what to do. Thank you !

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, testing after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.

Step 1

From the Mail menu bar, select

Window â–¹ Connection Doctor

Double-click the problem SMTP (outgoing mail) account in the window that opens. it. Another window will open, showing a list of all the outgoing mail accounts. The one you clicked will be selected.

Select the Advanced tab in the settings for the account and check the box marked

Automatically detect and maintain account settings

if it's not already checked.

If there's more than one problem account, repeat. Close the window and save the changes.

Step 2

Open the SMTP server list again. Make a note of the settings of the problem server, then click the minus-sign button to delete it, and confirm. Click the plus-sign button and recreate the account with the same settings.

If you're using Gmail, delete the account completely in the Internet Accounts preference pane and recreate it. The "detect and maintain" option must be selected in the Advanced settings for the incoming mail account.

The messages will be resynchronized with the server automatically, which may take hours if the mailboxes are very large.

Step 3

Quit Mail if it's running. Launch the Keychain Access application and enter the name of the outgoing mail server in the search box. For example, if you use Gmail, enter

smtp.gmail.com

Make a note of the password, then delete the keychain item(s). The next time Mail connects to the server, it will prompt for the password. Enter it and save the password in the keychain.

Step 4

The mail server may be using a weak, obsolete form of encryption to secure its communications with the clients. The update to OS X 10.10.4 changed the behavior of Mail and other applications so that they no longer tolerate weak security.

Log into the mail account on the website and see whether there is a security setting you can change. I can't be more specific. Refer to the service provider's documentation.

If there is no setting, persuade the server administrator to upgrade the server's security. He or she should do that anyway. Weak security affects all clients, not just Mac users.

Otherwise, you don't have any good options for continuing use Mail with the service. You could disable SSL in the advanced account settings, but that's very unsafe and may not work at all.

You might be able to get a more flexible mail client, such as "Thunderbird," to work with the service, or maybe you can access it via webmail.

Ideally you should switch to a better mail service provider. You wouldn't have this problem with a well-run service. The risks of weak SSL have been known for a long time, and competent server administrators have already taken the simple steps needed to avoid those risks.

I Did everything you suggested and it still doesn't work. Dang ! Really appreciate you offering to help. Im using COX email when I go to their website it sends messages easily. Obviously some compatibility issue l with Apple like the SSL. The problem is we have had these mail accounts for a long time and we have many things associated with them. What other secure and competent mail servers would you recommend ? as we may have to change who we use. I still haven't given up yet but it seems like the obvious thing to do.


Thank you again for your Help. The last time i used an Apple was the IIc and the IIGS long time ago, since its been Windows , so there is some fun in learning how to navigate OS X Yosemite.

Thank you fro the heads up on deleting personal information.. If i left something out please note it to me.


When I bought the iMac i went down to the Apple store and found the smartest kid there to come to my house and help me get acquainted with it. When we set up the mail, he had it set to MD5 Challenge-Response ? although i had user names and password in below. I wasn't sure why ? i have tried both the MD5 and password since i have had this problem. Just though tot not if it matters


Cox does offer TLS but id doesn't work when i have tied.

The server is sending an error message that usually indicates that you've been blacklisted as a spammer. That could be because you've exceeded some limit on the account, or because the server really thinks you're a spammer, or because you made too many failed attempts to log in, or for some other reason that I can't guess. Only Cox could tell you more, and you probably won't find it easy to get that information out of them.

I have been banging my head checking and double checking.

I don't know why my mail stop working...incoming was fine, outgoing hasn't worked for a while.

I've been using the outgoing servers from my other email accounts.

I finally decided to troubleshoot and then nothing! No incoming or outgoing!

This was a total fix!


Up and running.🙂 Again.
