Negative image on Apple TV from iPhone

When I turn on my Apple TV and select airplay from my iPhone 5s, a negative image appears on the screen. This does not happen with my wife's iPhone 5s, so I presume it is a setting that needs adjusted on my phone. Unfortunately, I do not know which one.

That appears to be working backwards!

Inverted colours should show when the switch is flipped right (it normally that highlights green, but is inverted by this setting to pink/ purple). What colour is the rest of the iPhone UI? For example what does this webpage background show white or black?

It looks like your device could be applying this invert colour rule when sending via Airplay but not for the rest of the UI?

I'd take another photo to be sure it isn't the image, it is easy to have multiple copies if you use apps to tweak photos.

If you are certain the image is correct…

Try changing the accessibility settings from iTunes on a Mac/ PC. Connect it to the iTunes you sync with & then look for the 'Configure accessibility' button in iTunes for that device, there is a setting for inverting colours there too.

If that doesn't help I would backup & erase the device. Test it again then restore the backup from iTunes (or iCloud) & test one more time. If the issue reappears you know it is a setting contained in your data. You would have to erase & manually restore apps if that was the case. If it doesn't reappear after an erase & restore you know the OS was misbehaving.

If this is too complex back it up & visit an Apple store via a genius appointment if possible, they may want to erase the device for you to see if it is consistent to to test Airplay on one of their devices.

To backup you can use one of two methods…

Via iTunes

Connect the to a Mac or PC that you have used to sync content with the device. Select the device & right click (or ctrl+click on a Mac) & select the option to backup. In iTunes you can also 'archive' backups in the 'Preferences, device tab' (right click a backup to select archive). That will freeze a backup in time, otherwise the backup is overwritten when you next backup the device.

Via iCloud

Login to iCloud in iOS 'Settings app > iCloud > Backup', enable the iCloud backup option.

Ensure the device is on wifi, it will upload the backup to iCloud, you may find that storage runs out if you have a lot of data in iCloud. It depends on your iCloud storage plan and how much data you have. Apps are not stored in the backup (they are part of the iTunes purchase history).

Apple explain it all at…

How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support

Note: if you want to keep the passwords within a backup enable the iTunes encryption option, otherwise you will need to re-enter them after restoring. Just do not forget your backup password, otherwise the backup is useless, the support page links to more info on that.

Hi Reese,

I spent a long time at the genius bar. The genius, Justin, said he had never encountered my problem. After playing with the accessibility settings,he backuped & erase my iPhone. Testing it again from iTunes (or iCloud), the issue reappeared. He concluded it was a setting contained in my data. He then erased the entire phone, and I lost my data from messages and photos and some settings, which was no big deal, since they were on my MAC. But the phone did performed properly after this step, so the problem apparently was with the operating system. I now have manually restored my apps, ringtones and settings.

I still am having problems restoring one short video to my phone. I have it placed in iTunes but it is not showing up on my iPhone when I sync it over my WiFi. Any help would be appreciated.

Are your movies setup to sync in iTunes? Can you see the movie if you enable sync for movies & then scroll through the list of files?

Also see if creating an 'iPhone version' helps. That can be done by selecting the movie in the iTunes movie list, then use 'File > Create new version'. See if that syncs after it is created. Check both your Photos camera roll & the videos app just in case you have managed to restore it into the photo roll.

Personally I prefer to sync over a cable when possible, wifi can be slow and the sync can be delayed because it can wait for the device to be put on charge and on the same network unless you force a sync in the settings or in iTunes.

I setup each phone to "sync only with checked songs and videos." I also connected my iPhone via cable. I even set up a separate playlist for the video I want to bring into my phone. I also created an "iPhone version." Under movies in the iPhone dropdown, I checked both the movie in the top portion and the playlist containing the movie in the bottom portion and then synced. I also found the movie under "On My Device" and synced it again. Unfortunately, I do not see the movie in either the Video App or the Photo app. All I see in Video app is "Store" "Shared" at the top and an icon for "shared" at the bottom.

If you can see it 'on my device' it seems likely it will be on the iPhone. Search in Spotlight on the device for the file name or the title as it is set in iTunes. On the home screen drag the icons down to show the search field at the top.

I can't think of any reason those items wouldn't show up, but iOS is getting good at hiding where things appear so have another dig into photos & the various layouts (Albums, collections, timeline) to see if it appears in those. Reboot if for what it is worth. Obviously if they are DRM'd files the device will need to be authorised to play them.

I suspect you could add the files to Dropbox or another third party app & play them from there, however the built in features should support them!

Bear in mind that some tags & settings on the files may alter where the items appear - e.g 'kind = podcast or audiobook' then they would appear in a different app on iOS. Use iTunes's info dialog to see more detail on the files.

Sorry I can't think what is going on here. If you can't figure it out, please post a new topic - it may get more attention if it describes this issue better. I have a feeling you may get a few 'erase & restore the device' suggestions 😟
