Q: Old iPod nano in recovery mode - iTunes asking for passcode I don't know

I have been given an old iPod by a friend so my daughter can listen to her music.  The iPod hasn't been used for years. 

When I turn it on it tells me to use iTunes to restore (in a number of languages).

When I plug it in to iTunes it tells me the iPod is in recovery mode and must be restored.

I click OK and it comes up with a user name and passcode request. 

I tried my iTunes log ins and that didn't work.

I tried the log ins my friend is pretty sure were right for the iPod (but it hasn't been used for years so understandably he may have this wrong).

Any ideas?
