I need more memory to run final cut pro on my i mac 20 ", Early 2008. Will I be able to do this with 2 x 2GB memory . Can I buy this directly from apple?
Buy the RAM from a source such as Crucial or OWC; you should check that the seller advertises compatibility with your Mac model before the purchase.

Also, I don't believe that Apple sells memory modules for 2008 iMacs any longer.
FWIW, I've never had any problems with memory purchased from either of the two companies Niel mentioned.
